Common Fungal Infections That Show up in the Summer and Their Treatment
July is one of the hottest months of the year, and with it comes the chances of fungal infection because you are perspiring in the heat and humidity. This makes the yeast that is naturally growing on your skin grow out of control. The following can increase your chances of a fungal infection in the summertime:
Causes of Fungal Infections:
-Visiting public pools and showers inviting athlete’s foot (tinea pedis), causing redness, itchiness and cracked skin between the toes. Keep your feet dry.
-Wearing sweaty socks and shoes from working out invites athlete’s foot. Let your feet breathe.
-Playing in hot, humid weather can lead to impetigo, a common skin infection in children. Lesions can arise on their arms, legs and face, first as red patches, then blisters. Keep an eye out for insect bites and scrapes where bacteria can spread.
-Wearing sweaty underwear and clothing can lead to jock itch (the same fungus in athlete’s foot), an itchy rash in the groin area. Wear loose-fitting underwear and change it often.
-Wearing wet bathing suits – sitting around in damp swimwear can lead to vaginal yeast infections. Change right after swimming.
Signs of a Fungal Infection:
-White, pink, salmon, red, tan or brown spots
-Dry, scaly spots
-Spots growing together
-Spots that won’t tan
-Spots that disappear when it’s cold and comes back when it’s warm and humid
Treatment often involves medication to the skin through an anti-fungal shampoo, soap, cream or lotion to control the yeast. Anti-fungal pills may be prescribed if needed.
