Spider veins are small clusters of red, blue or purple veins that appear on the thighs, calves and ankles. For some women, spider veins become noticeable at a young age. In others, spider veins are not visible until much later. The following can contribute to the development of spider veins:
- Heredity
- Hormonal shifts
- Occupations or activities that require prolonged sitting or standing
- Pregnancy
- Weight fluctuation
Dr. Kraig K. Jenson, Byron Edwards or Dr. Devin Burr provide sclerotherapy to treat spider veins in Orem, Utah. To prepare for treatment, we may ask you to:
- Avoid taking aspirin and supplements that can increase bleeding
- Stop smoking
- Take certain medications or adjust your current medications
Our dermatologists will inject a sclerosing solution into the legs, which irritates the inside of the vein. The vein will collapse and fade from view over time. Those with multiple spider veins will require multiple injections to collapse all of the veins. After your spider veins have been treated, the area will be dressed with compressive tape or stockings or an elastic Ace wrap. The area may appear bruised at first, but this will fade after a few weeks.
