Fungal Treatment of Cosmetic Dermal Defects
Human skin is a complex organ consisting of many different layers and structures. It also carries a diverse ecology of microbes. This includes yeast and other possible fungal spores.
If dermal yeast microbes grow out of balance it can start to develop dermal defects known as tinea versicolor. This is a special type of skin disease that is not immediately contagious even from direct contact.
While it is not considered to be physically harmful tinea versicolor can cause discoloration of the skin as well as the development of other cosmetic defects. This can include discolored spots on the skin in shades of white, pink, salmon, red, tan, or brown. It can also result in dry and scaly spots, areas that don’t tan.
Over time the areas can start to grow together to essentially grow in size. The fungal presence of tinea versicolor can sometimes disappear during colder times of year only to return in the spring or summer when the air once again becomes warm and humid.
Here at the Dermatology Center in Orem, Utah, our doctors Dr. Jenson and Dr. Edwards can provide treatment for a dermal fungal infection.
This might include a topical medication, an anti-fungal shampoo, soap, cream, or lotion to keep the yeast population controlled. If necessary, we might also advise using a medicated cleanser once or twice each month as a preventive measure. In a significant case of tinea versicolor our dermatologists may provide you with a prescription for anti-fungal pills.
